The Power of Positive Thinking: Unlimited Possibilities

Does negative thinking pay? Is it desirable for me to encourage thoughts in my mind that break down, hinder, and incapacitate me for good work? Do I want negative thoughts that inevitably bring discontent, unhappiness, and ultimate failure in their train?

Your answer will be, of course, that you do not want them. But such thoughts work insidiously, and will find an entrance into your mind if you are not extremely vigilant. The surest way to keep them out, however, is to fill the mind completely with vital positive thoughts, to think constantly of yourself as a man of unlimited possibilities, growing daily in mental and spiritual power, equipped for great things, a necessary part of God's glorious creation, and moving forward toward a triumphant and immortal destiny.

It is difficult to construct positive thoughts out of the poor stuff from which dreams are made. A man should devote himself particularly to the practical things of life. Some men learn this lesson all too late, for, as Thoreau says, "Youth gets together the materials for a bridge to the moon, and maturity uses them to build a wood-shed."

The habit of right thinking, when firmly established, becomes a source of attraction. Good thoughts soon become great thoughts, and the mature mind attempts even the impossible. The power of a single thought at the beginning of a day can hardly be estimated. It can change despondency into hope, and fear into courage. It can nerve the arm for great and noble deeds. It can strengthen a weak and timid character into four-fourths of a man. It is possible for it to set in motion an influence that will reach the ends of the world.

The importance of right thinking is its effect upon right doing. How many disastrous mistakes are made for lack of proper thought? How many of life's failures are due to a careless and unwise selection of a business or profession?

It was Sidney Smith who said: "If we represent the occupations of life by holes in a table, some round, some square, some oblong, and persons by bits of wood of like shapes, we shall generally find that the triangular person has got into the square hole, the oblong into the triangular, while the square person has squeezed himself into the round hole."

Right thinking means that which constructs, strengthens, and ennobles. It means better manhood, the pluck to do and to dare, and the heroism of mighty endeavor. It knows no limitation, but reaches out daily for new conquests. It is a power unto itself, growing through its own use.

Are You Positive? The Power of Positive Thinking

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

A recent event game me the opportunity to experience the power of positive thinking. All too often we let the rigors of the day get to us and we end up caught in the mire. We easily lose sight of staying positive when the negativity around us creates an obstacle. It's not until something big happens that we remember to put things into perspective. When you have the opportunity, as I did, to assess whether you are taking advantage of the power of positive thinking: there are five questions you can consider to help maintain your positive focus. As we go through each question, I'll use my recent experience as an example.

The five questions to consider are:

    1. How does positive thinking fit with what I value?
    2. Have I made assumptions?
    3. What's perfect about where I'm at right now?
    4. What will my reaction be?
    5. Who do I choose to show up as in this world?

So the first question you may ask yourself, "How does positive thinking fit with what I value?" Your values define who you are. They help to shape what you want and how you live your life. Positive thinking fits differently for everyone because we may have different values. For example, I value being healthy, feeling good, and working out (physical activity). Remembering that I have this value assisted me in maintaining a high level of positive thinking when I was faced with the possibility that I had cancer. I chose not to think that I could have something terribly wrong with me, but instead I focused on knowing that I felt really good, I was working out and overall was very healthy. I was also thinking that if something was wrong with me I was going to do whatever it took to become healthy again. By reviewing my value(s) I maintained positive thinking at a time when negativity could have easily crept in.

The second question to consider is, "Have I made assumptions?" We often make assumptions to fill in the unknown when we are uncomfortable leaving the unknown unknown. And so many times we assume the worst. After multiple diagnostic scans, the cancer surgeon still didn't have conclusive evidence. It was a big unknown. I could have made many assumptions about what it was. I could have assumed it was malignant, benign, or nothing at all. I stayed very aware of whether I was making assumptions by checking in with myself. I asked whether I really knew the answer or if I was just trying to fill in an unknown. By actively refusing to make assumptions I was able to stay much more positive about moving forward.

The third questions is about finding your silver lining: "What's perfect about where I'm at right now?" Sometimes we find it hard to find the silver lining in the situation we're in. It often tires to elude us with lots of distractions. I have to admit, finding what was perfect about potentially having cancer was not easy and I did it. It was perfect that if something was wrong, we found it and could begin working on correcting it. It was perfect that I was surrounded with family, friends, and colleagues who fully supported me and sent their positive thoughts my way. It was perfect that I was experiencing something that I had never experienced before. By reviewing what was perfect about the situation I was able to keep smiling each day.

The fourth question has to do with your reaction. Ask yourself, "What will my reaction be?" The one thing we have control over in a situation is how we choose to react. Thinking back, I had many opportunities where I could have chosen to react negatively: when I first found out that we were looking at the possibility of cancer; when I found out I needed more scans to take a closer look; and when I found out I had to have surgery for a biopsy. Each step of the way I asked myself, "What will my reaction be?" I decided that my reactions would be grounded in positive thinking. I was thankful that I had the best cancer surgeon working with me. I was appreciative that we were going to figure out what we were seeing on the scans. I reacted with curiosity and a drive to find out what was going on. Had I not utilized the power of positive thinking I may have reacted with anger or resentment. The power of positive thinking kept my reaction positively focused each step of the way.

The last question is really an umbrella over all of the other questions and that is to ask, "Who do I choose to show up as in this world?" When confronting difficult situations we sometimes forget that we are still in this world and affecting the people around us. We don't drop out of our families, work, or society just because we're having a tough time. How we choose to show up each day is a reflection of our character. Regardless of the situation I was faced with, when I asked myself who I chose to show up as, it reminded me that overall I am positive, I help others, and I have fun. Why would I let one thing going on in my life alter who I choose to show up as? I answered myself with, I wouldn't. So I didn't.

These five questions helped me maintain a positive perspective on what seemed to be a very serious situation. As I read back through this, it reads a lot easier than it really was. I'll be the first to admit that it is not always easy to utilize positive thinking, but when you do it truly is powerful. I reached out to my family and friends via email with a request that they share their positive thoughts with me just before I went into surgery. Many wrote back with beautiful positive thoughts and I knew that I had an amazing powerful force working in my favor. When the surgeon opened my up he found absolutely nothing to biopsy. He was so amazed he had one of his partners take a look and tell him what he saw. The partner looked and was amazed too. All of the scans had apparently showed a false positive. The surgeons were baffled. They really didn't know what to think. I know what I think. I think it's the power of positive thinking!

    What is an Affirmation?

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

One asserts the self to believe in something is called the process of affirmation, be it in a negative manner or positively. What differentiates a successful person from the others is the positive outlook in his temperament. He appears happy and casual, and accepts all facts about himself and tries to learn from all those. He ensures that no negativity impacts him in his ambition.

On the other hand, an unsuccessful person is full of sorrow, self pity and jealousy with failure. Rarely does he tries to find the fault within and always blames the circumstances that went against him. The success of others makes him feel that he is deprived despite being deserving. Such a person also can be corrected with the constant mentoring of a guide. But it is negative attitude to look for constant acknowledgement. Since people who can sincerely appreciate are rare now a day, one may be caught in a vicious circle of going negative over and over again.

One can get reoriented into believing oneself with the personal affirmation process. Let us see what affirmation is all about. It is a process whereby one starts feeling comfortable with the self as well as with the surrounding. Affidavits of such inner happenings manifest in encouraging incidences in external world. Though it is not easy to start believing in oneself, still it may be amusing for people to get into the process of affirmation on an experiment basis. While starting out afresh, one has to keep the past experiences behind and should be able to look forward. One has to recognize the past follies and should learn from those, if at all the looking back is necessary. It is only beneficial if we can emphasize more on our positive aspects.

The daily affirmation process starts with stressing the intended points to the self. Those points are to be sufficiently seen and visualized so much so that one starts believing them as realities already in shape. Seldom is it realized that the negative projection about a possibility is also mostly false and imaginary which acts as obstruction in our progress. Instead, if we start imagining positively by just reversing the attitude, it brings happiness along with success.

One can start by writing down 365 cards with messages about what one is, and the capability of the self. Each card may contain visualization indicating the equivalent of the affirmation like a slim body or a car. Another category of cards within those 365 will be about the dreams that will be a reality of the future. The cards should be of 3 x 5 inches size to be sufficiently visible and should appear prominent on the desk. One needs to concentrate on the cards for 20 -30 minutes everyday sitting in a relaxed position. The next thing is to visualize oneself in those actions when those dreams get actualized. This will improve one's self confidence and treatment of the self. This assertion process changes one's gait while walking which also conveys positive atmosphere all around making people feel good besides the self.

Affirmation is the confirmation of good things coming to one's life
