Positive Thinking - Winning Versus Not Losing

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

>>  Click Here To Discover How You Can Create The Life You Want <<

Do you play to win or do you play not to lose? This difference in mental attitudes makes a huge difference in almost everything you do – from your business, to your relationships, to martial arts.

I was watching a martial arts movie and in the middle was an obligatory training session where the hero, with the help of an old teacher, recovers from a severe beating and prepares to exact his revenge on the villains.

One scene stood out in my mind for days afterwards because of his master’s comment after kicking his ass in a sparring session.

“Fear is reflected in your sword. When you dodge, you think ‘don’t cut me!’ When you protect someone, you think ‘don’t hurt them!’ Even when you attack, you are thinking ‘I don’t want to hurt you!’”

“What do I think? When I dodge – ‘you will NOT hit me!’ When I protect someone – ‘you will NOT hurt them!’ And when I attack – ‘DIE!’”

Negative and fearful thinking

Does this apply to you and your life? You get what your predominant thoughts are on. This applies in any endeavour we can undertake. For example, in my boxing training, this was exactly the way I sparred. I boxed in fear – I boxed not to lose, and although I got out uninjured, I didn’t win either. Many fighters in the combat sports like Mixed Martial Arts or Boxing have the same mindset; and they don’t often reach the upper ranks.

What about relationships? I remember approaching a pretty young woman that caught my eye in a bar, and I didn’t do very well. My friend saw the whole event. He said that it was obvious in my body language that I didn’t commit. In a way, I rejecting myself, I was preparing for failure. If you prepare for failure, if fear of failure dominates your actions and your thoughts, what do you think will happen?

The same applies to careers and finances. When I started my first enterprise years ago, my mindset was ‘hope I don’t go broke’. Can you guess if I did well in the first year?

Committing to win and burning all bridges

The moment a person decides to fully commit to a venture, and burns all the bridges behind him so he or she has no way of turning back, the whole situation changes.

Examples of this philosophy abound. Napoleon Hill in his landmark book “Think and Grow Rich” gives several examples of this in a financial setting, and goes so far to state that a man cannot fail if he decides to fully commit.

Among many martial arts teachings, this dynamic is also prominent. The immortal Bruce Lee describes it as “emotional content”. A kick with emotional content will have more power then a kick without the same, even though the body mechanics may be the same. There is a now famous scene in Enter the Dragon, where he shows a young student the way. In it, he also cautions – Do not confuse emotional content with anger.

Remember that business venture I mentioned in the section above? I’m still in that enterprise, but I’ve shifted my thinking. Now I’m out to win, I’m out to succeed. Externally, the actions are the same. I’m doing the same form of marketing, I’m meeting clients the same way, and my prices are the same. But the money and clients are coming in far quicker then in my old way of thinking.

Implementation

This is one facet of positive thinking. Positive thinking is our natural state. Fearful or negative thinking dominates most the minds of most people. That is a bad habit that covers up our natural joy of life.

Making the switch to positive thinking takes much effort. We ingrain this habit so deeply into ourselves over the years that it’s hard to catch yourself when you are thinking negatively.

Remember that your predominant mental attitude is what produces results. You will not get positive results with 10 minutes of positive thinking and happiness if you spend the entire day in worry, regret, and fear.

While there are many tools to master your thoughts, such as meditation, I recommend starting with this aspect of positive thinking. If you still catch yourself making negative thoughts, break it down even further. Pick one area of your life that you want to improve. For example, if you are single and lonely. Enjoy your aloneness, or go out and meet new people, but do so with an attitude of joy.

If you catch yourself thinking “Oh, I’m so shy I can’t meet anyone”, immediately switch to the opposite thought, but making sure to acknowledge your shyness – don’t deny it. “I’m shy, but I’m going to smile and talk to someone and enjoy myself.” Say this often enough and it will be your new mental habit, replacing the old. Then watch your whole life change before your eyes.

    Does Positive Thinking Really Work?

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

    >>  Click Here To Discover How You Can Create The Life You Want <<

You've probably heard self-improvement authors and speakers extol the virtues of "positive thinking".

The idea is that in order to succeed at something, we must first think positive -- we must convince ourselves that we can do it. Even better, we should visualize ourselves doing it.

Well, I'm no psychologist, and I reckon positive thinking (and visualization) is helpful.

But I DON'T think positive thinking alone is any more effective than negative thinking.

    What really works?

    Positive ACTION.

And frankly, you can think NEGATIVE all you want... but if you still ACT... you'll be light-years ahead of anyone who does nothing except think positive thoughts.

    Want proof?

Well, let me ask you this: have you ever been disappointed? Have you ever been pleasantly surprised?

Both situations are where what actually happened was totally different to what you thought would happen.

When you were disappointed -- your expectations were dashed. When you were pleasantly surprised, your expectations were exceeded.

Happens all the time. That's why I don't believe positive or negative thinking are absolutely essential to success or failure. Otherwise there would be no such concept as "surprise".

Positive action -- actually doing something no matter whether or not you think it'll work -- is what really makes the difference.

I need only think back to the time I was somehow persuaded to run in my first running race. I dreaded it. I thought I would come last. My head was filled with NEGATIVE thoughts.

But I did it anyway. And you know what -- I was not only among the first across the line, but I fell in LOVE with racing!

Now I don't want you to think negative. In fact, I want you to be as positive as possible. I want you to visualize yourself succeeding. Not because I think these are necessary preconditions for success -- but because if you think positive you're MORE LIKELY TO ACT.

Chronic negative thinking is likely to plant so many doubts and fears in your head that you are far more likely to associate failure with your goal than success... and, as a result, give up rather than go ahead. It's also a pretty unhappy state to be in.

But regardless of how you think... JUST DO IT!

By doing it you're way more likely to convince yourself that you CAN do it than merely imagining yourself doing it. And of course, doing it is the ONLY way you'll actually achieve the success you want.

By all means, think positive. But most of all ACT.

The Flagrant Abuse Of Positive Thinking

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

    >>  Click Here To Discover How You Can Create The Life You Want <<

Do you remember Admiral James Stockdale, the guy who was Ross Perot’s Vice Presidential candidate in ‘the ‘92 election?

If you don’t, don’t worry too much… he didn’t fare so well as a VP candidate or in politics for that matter, but he was quite an impressive military man. He was former president of the Naval War College and was the highest ranking officer in the “Hanoi Hilton” in Vietnam.

He happened to spend eight long years as a captive in Hanoi and was tortured numerous times.

    Mr. Thomas Barnett relates:

"Stockdale tells the story of the optimists who never survived their time in Hanoi, simply because they clung far too much to their dreams of release and in doing so couldn’t handle the brutal realities of what it took to survive the day to day.

“So instead of dealing with the here and now realistically, they tended to cling to the hope that they’d be home by whatever the next holiday was, and when that day came and went, their spirit would be diminished by that measure.

“Over time, they died because their spirit was extinguished by reality.”

Stockdale’s explains his “paradox” this way:

“You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end (which you can never afford to lose) with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

What Stockdale was really describing is the flagrant abuse of ‘positive thinking.’

And you know what? A lot of exercisers and fat loss candidates are really just too optimistic. Worse yet, the weight loss pitchmen exploit this and sell ridiculously unrealistic plans to starry-eyed people.

    What a shame.

I seriously doubt anything you ever face in the exercise world will be as dreadful as the Hanoi Hilton. Still, nothing can be worse for you than to walk into battle with a plastic sword and helmet, and then get cut down with tanks and machine guns.

    You wanna survive… then thrive…

Here are some wise precautions that will prepare you for adversity and ensure your success:

    • Understand that everything isn’t going to happen all at once and sudden change isn’t necessarily a good thing.
    • Assume that every ‘new’ product or supplement will not be on the market in a year because of faulty claims
    • Assume that you will be able to find that ‘new’ ab thingy in a someone’s yard sale in 6 months
    • Assume that some days aren’t going to allow you the time to exercise - so start working out in the morning

A positive attitude can take you places. However, don’t let it be a substitute for you taking an accurate picture of your current reality in the process.

You can change your reality through time and effort with the help of positive thinking. But… positive thinking alone won’t help you. In fact, as we’ve seen above, it can actually be detrimental to your success.

Positive Thinking - Success Is Not A Secret

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

    >>  Click Here To Discover How You Can Create The Life You Want <<

Whether a person will become successful actually starts with his state of mind.

    You are what you think.

    Positive thinkingis a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Our mind believes in what we tell it. When we keep telling ourselves something repeatedly now and then, it somehow gets itself registered in our brain. Step by step, our mind learns to accept and slowly believes in it. Eventually, we will become what we have been telling ourselves.

When your thoughts and beliefs are positive, you will attract more positive circumstances or products into your life and success is just a step away. Success is not a secret that avails to only an elite few. It can be achieved by anyone at any time.

How can this happen? Goals and success are not and certainly cannot be achieved overnight.

It is actually the power of our own beliefs that is working. In other words, it is the power of our positive thinking.

Simply put, when we feed our brain with something, we begin to attract what we keep thinking about. Once our brain has accepted and digested the information, it will command our body to act. The actions are usually instigated by our belief. It is because we actually believe in it that our bodies are moving in momentum with our thoughts. The only variability is the strength of our belief. If our belief is durable and strong, our brains are most likely going to act on it.

Every action will be met with a balanced reaction. Any action we take will create some kind of consequence or circumstance. We must think positively so as to maintain our belief and desire to succeed. What we manifest will gradually be turned into our reality and eventually it will also create our destiny.

However, all worthwhile achievements take time. Once a vision has been set as a permanent fixture into our positive thoughts, we must cultivate the fortitude of consistence and persistence in our efforts. Everyday, our actions will shape or mould our reality according to what we want it to be. These steps will take us closer towards getting our crystalline goals.

Be prepared that lots of work and efforts have to be put in. It is not going to be an easy path. There will be obstacles and failures along the road to success. You must treat these hurdles as opportunities to learn. You have to overcome them and do not let them slow down your progress. Gradually with time, you will attract positive circumstances, encounters, ideas and even people who can and will assist you to soar towards your goals.

70 miles north of New York City is the home of positive thinking, Pawling, New York. Pawling is a town of Optimists and one Optimist that put this town on the map was Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. Beyond Positive Thinking

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

    >>  Click Here To Discover How You Can Create The Life You Want <<

On November 2nd the Larry King show on CNN was focused on the topic, “Beyond Positive Thinking.” Mr. King’s guests were John Assaraf, the Rev. Michael Beckwith, Dr. John Demartini J.Z. Knight and Bob Proctor. The basic premise of the show was that people have the power to control and to create their own reality. The panel of guests indicated that our everyday lives are controlled and created unconsciously by our subconscious mind. That, in fact, our subconscious mind is responsible for some 96% to 98% of our everyday lives. While the subconscious mind has been the controlling factor, the conscious mind has the ability to break the pattern and to dictate our reality.

The guests said that people have the ability to create and to control such things as health, abundance, relationships and literally every aspect of our being. The question was raised as to whether or not this was just a matter of reciting positive affirmations as the key to this struggle between the two aspects of our minds. All of the panelists agreed that the issue goes ‘beyond positive thinking.” In order to truly take conscious control of our life it is necessary to change our vibratory nature and to utilize the laws of physics to “attract” those things that we want to change, bring into or to remove from our lives. The notion of Quantum physics says that the entire universe, us included, are vibratory in nature and that when a person truly vibrates their thinking in a positive way, they literally attract positive things into their lives. The movie, “The Secret” was cited as being a guide as to how this process works. They could also have referenced the cult hit “What the Bleep Do We Know” as another example of scientists offering tangible proof as to how this process works.

Is any of this new? Yes and no. Mystics have long held that we do, in fact, control our reality; not just the little things in life, but everything. They have maintained that regardless of our circumstances, each person has the innate, Universe or God given ability to create or alter reality to our choosing. They say that we are not here to suffer or to live a life of misery but rather, each conflict or problem that we confront is merely an opportunity to express our ‘higher selves,’ to evolve and to alter the circumstances to our liking. They claim that there is no such thing as a God who seeks to punish and that so called errors are merely opportunities to grow. This concept only makes sense if you understand that we live countless lives and that we are evolving to a higher state of being.

These concepts, once restricted to the initiated few, came to light in the so called New Age. Voices from people such as Ram Dass, Depak Chopra, Joel Goldsmith, John Price, L. Ron Hubbard, Dr. Hew Len and countless others expressed the notion that reality is of our own making and choosing, regardless of appearances to the contrary. The basic premise is that our past conditioning should be re-evaluated and that we should ‘consciously’ determine the way in which we wish to live.

So, why all of the misery? If we have the ability to alter our reality, and the reality of the world, then why is humanity still so locked into a world of war, bigotry, disease and turmoil? Proponents of ‘beyond positive thinking’ maintain that we must take that 2-4% of conscious thought and turn that into a much higher percentage. In other words, humanity must take responsibility for its actions, individually and collectively.

The question to be raised is what is the cause of all of our negative conditioning that result in all of humanity’s woes? Those on the Larry King show did not address this issue nor where they asked by the studio audience. One guest brought up genetic disposition as a minor issue but it was not seen to be the major culprit. Since this is an opinion piece I will offer my answer that is found in our new book, WAKING GOD.

For over 2,000 years humanity has been told that it is inherently evil, doomed and basically not worth the price of its chemical composition. The ‘greatly misinterpreted’ message of great prophets in both the East and West has been so twisted that humanity is of the belief that its existence is at the whim of some vengeful god that will probably destroy, again, all of its creation because it is essentially worthless. We have been told that we are in need of salvation because there is a great evil force in the world and that we are under the control of that evil force. If we are fortunate, and follow the rules of established churches and mosques, there is a slim chance that we may not burn for eternity for our woe begotten ways. And you ask why people do not believe they can create a new reality.

On my way to work I pass numerous churches that are adorned with marquees proclaiming the ways to salvation. The one I really enjoy says, “Jesus First, Others Second, and Yourself Last.” This is supposed to be a message of hope? When we are ingrained with the myth that we are to consider ourselves last, what hope is there that we have the power to transform society? If we cannot put our own house-life-in order, how can we possibly put the world back in order? Organized religions have lulled humanity into a false reality in which man has no control over his destiny. It is only by their good graces, so we are told, that we have any hope of happiness. We are told that if we are miserable, it is because we have angered god and we deserve what we get. We are also told that the only choice that we can make is to follow their dogma and pray that it is enough to escape the eternal fires of damnation. Is it any wonder that under this cloak of doom that man has a hard time taking control of his thoughts and utilizing the divine gift of creativity? We are sick because we have sinned. We are poor because we have sinned. We are at war because we have sinned. We are unhappy because we have sinned. We are out of work because we have sinned. The list is endless.

The guests on Larry King’s show said that the only blame that we can truly place upon ourselves for the status of our lives is ignorance. We are ignorant about our abilities and we are ignorant that the Universe has given us all the opportunity to change the world by changing the way we think. I hope take the step that goes “beyond positive thinking.”

Mr. Harris is co-author of the novel, WAKING GOD, and author of the novel, A MAINE CHRISTMAS CAROL. He is a guest contributor to UPI's web site, Religion and Spirituality, maintains a blog on "All Things That Matter" and has been featured by numerous ezines. He is also a featured writer for The American Chronicle.

    Practical Positive Thinking

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

    >>  Click Here To Discover How You Can Create The Life You Want <<

It is a sad to me that most people still do not recognize the possible benefits of positive thinking. This resistance to what is really a simple notion comes from a number of angles. Some people may shy away from anything to do with the mind, and dismiss any related subject as nonsense; others may laugh it off as a New Age fad, airy fairy hogwash with no scientific proof, much in the same arena as UFO's piloted by aliens. Some may even have tried positive thinking once for two minutes, saw no great change in their lives, so reverted to normal.

At least with aliens and UFO's you can make movies and television series to make them exciting, but with down to earth positive thinking that is not so. Watching somebody think is not good drama, and results of positive thinking in practice can be very slow and subtle anyway.

Two of the attractions of using positive thinking are that it is easy, and it is free. However, before being convinced that it is something they should use, most people would need to see some quite dramatic and immediate example of its success, which is not easy to find. Given that positive thinking has to be applied over time to bring noticeable results in an individual, a stark and living example of the successful use of positive thinking is hard to come by.

So, what of the positive thinking examples that have happened over time, with a successful outcome? They can be easily dismissed by those who just do not want to believe: “Oh, that would have happened anyway, without positive thinking.” However, if the story is told to a lot of people, maybe one or two people will start to wonder: “Oh, maybe there is something in positive thinking after all.”

I think that probably the most convincing argument in favour of positive thinking is that it is plain common sense. An individual has their own mind, which controls their body and their actions. If that mind is sending out an overload of negative signals all the time, is the outcome not going to sway towards the negative? That sounds like a common sense notion to me, not hocus pocus, New Age, or even some advanced scientific theory. If the mind is sending out predominantly positive messages, then the opposite would be true.

Even without the common sense angle, though, I have good reason to believe the use of positive thinking in my own life has been both positive in its results, and significant in its impact. I am therefore able to support my belief in positive thinking with practical examples, and in the following three articles will recall some of those longer term examples.

The Cause Of Affirmation Problems And How To Solve It

Life Strategies For Helping You Help Yourself

    >>  Click Here To Discover How You Can Create The Life You Want <<

The primary reason to why affirmations don't work, or only work to a certain extent, is that we are not receptive to them – Our debilitating emotions and disturbing thoughts simply stop them from working.

This is a paradox, because affirmations are very often used with the express purpose of eliminating negative feelings and disturbing thoughts so we can get what we long for. But they can't be used this way. Not effectively and never long-term. We all know that.

So the only solution to this problem is to first heal ourselves from negative feelings and disturbing thoughts.

    How can we do this?

Well, we need to know that all our reactions to the different events that occur in our lives are, in essence, always based on who and what we believe we are – in other words, on our innermost self-image and sense of worth as a human being - or more simply stated – based on our self-esteem...

We need, in other words, to take care of our self-esteem so we can free ourselves from debilitating emotions and disturbing thoughts.

Once this is accomplished (we can all do this) affirmations will start to work in a more effective and successful way.

And in many cases, we won’t even need affirmations anymore because positive self-esteem enables us to think through positive affirmations automatically – with no effort on our part – both on a conscious and subconscious level...

And here's where the magic starts. Here’s where the The Law of Attraction starts to work at its best and fullest potential.

We can finally attract the success, wealth, and the circumstances that bring us joy, free of limiting beliefs and disturbances in our mind, that limit our potential for happiness and success.
